Existing Conditions and Access Rules

The sidewalks on the Golden Gate Bridge allow for bicycle and pedestrian access across the Bridge, subject to certain regulations on different times and days of the week. All pedestrian and bicyclist travel is bi-directional, meaning travel is happening in both directions within a sidewalk area that is open for access.

Pedestrian Access

Pedestrians and wheelchairs are only allowed on the East Sidewalk

  • 5:00am to 6:30 pm PST, and 5:00am to 9:00 pm PDT
  • Automatic gates prevent access during nighttime hours
  • Roller bladers, skateboards, and roller skates are not permitted

Bicycle Access

Bicyclists have toll-free access to the bridge sidewalks at all times. The District’s Master Ordinance currently does not address electric powered bicycles (e-bikes). Motorized bicycles are permitted to be walked or ridden across the bridge but must be in power-off mode.
